Cockroaches

Considered the oldest and hardiest of insects, cockroaches have existed in the world for hundreds of millions of years. Though there are thousands of species worldwide, the American, the brown-banded, the oriental and the wood cockroach are the insect types most commonly found in Canada. In Calgary, we most commonly see the German cockroach. Given the nature of our climate, cockroaches struggle to survive in our cold winters. The insects generally enter homes and other buildings by outside food sources, such as groceries or takeout. They are known for traveling through garbage and sewage before contacting food preparation areas or food. As such, the pests often carry a variety of harmful bacteria that may include coliform, E. coli, salmonella, staph and strep. Fecal matter left behind by the roaches also often causes respiratory problems for individuals having allergies.
